I'm retired from racing. Really. We had 17 people. I was on red team, covering Dennis. Then, about 15 minutes in, Dennis ran it to try to intercept a disc to someone else, got upended, and came down on his arm. He broke his arm or wrist (or severely dislocated his wrist). Ouch. Julian took him to the doctor. The red team was killing the other team, so Claire and I swapped teams. Red kept killing blue team- they were up 4-2. My blue team had way too many bad throws and a few drops. We made a comeback and tied it up 4-4, but then lost in the end. Too many bad throws. I think I only had 1 turnover in the game to 5- a throw into the endzone hung up too long and was knocked away. Pretty good game for me, otherwise- no drops, generally good passing. But I don't like 14 people on the field- too crowded. My prefer 10 or 12.
Fri, 21 Sep 2018 06:00:00 Thu, Sep 20, 2018 http://Jon.fastrunningblog.com/blog-09-20-2018.html
AM- first run in a while. 1 loop on GE trail. Saw 7 deer, including 2 young bucks, and a rafter of 9 female turkey right at the turnaround point. Then did a little stationary bike.
Thu, 20 Sep 2018 06:00:00 Wed, Sep 19, 2018 http://Jon.fastrunningblog.com/blog-09-19-2018.html
14 people for frisbee. Still hot- it's usually not this hot still this time of the year. I refused the split the teams so the method they used ended up with fairly uneven teams- my team was weaker on speed and throwing. We gave it a good effort, though I had 3 drops, while I usually have 0. My throwing was better, though I didn't throw any long (that was a pre-game decision). I've been trying to improve my forehand throwing.

Game to 5 started and we had a few bad turnovers and were outplayed, down 4-1. We scored 2 more before getting beat. I think I caught 2 of the 3 points on my team, but also gave up 2. Fun day, not my best play (too many drops- I didn't do my normal pre-game mental warmup, so I'm blaming that).
Wed, 19 Sep 2018 06:00:00 Tue, Sep 18, 2018 http://Jon.fastrunningblog.com/blog-09-18-2018.html
3 xt to rest the ankle/achilles
Tue, 18 Sep 2018 06:00:00 Mon, Sep 17, 2018 http://Jon.fastrunningblog.com/blog-09-17-2018.html
10 people for frisbee, my favorite number. The other team had better throwers, pretty even on speed. Hot but overcast and very breezy. The frisbee gods did not want my team to win today- it was humorous how many of our throws would get caught by the wind or turn the wrong way, while it seemed like every long throw by the other team would turn just perfectly to their catcher, or every tipped disc would go right to them. My team had a large number of bad throws and other self-inflicted wounds today, too, but fate was definitely not on our side. We were down 4-1 before scoring 1 more, then were defeated. 5-2. Blah- every tipped disc I had today still went to Dennis. Oh well. Still fun, but some days are more fun than others.
Mon, 17 Sep 2018 06:00:00 Fri, Sep 14, 2018 http://Jon.fastrunningblog.com/blog-09-14-2018.html
Lunch- frisbee 19 people, so 2 fields. Somewhat windy due to coming hurricane. For first game, my team had better throwers but the other team definitely had more speed, and that was before their slowest person and one of our fastest guys left. The 3 other guys on my team were all outmatched on speed. We were down 4-2 but then really cracked down on unforced errors while the other team had some bad throws. We somehow came back for 5-4 win. Tiring.

The other field had someone sprain the ankle right at the end. Between the heat and long games (due to wind), no one wanted to play another game.
Fri, 14 Sep 2018 06:00:00 Thu, Sep 13, 2018 http://Jon.fastrunningblog.com/blog-09-13-2018.html
AM decided to rest the foot so did some biking
Thu, 13 Sep 2018 06:00:00 Wed, Sep 12, 2018 http://Jon.fastrunningblog.com/blog-09-12-2018.html
Lunch- cloudy but warm and humid. 13 people but Scott left as he was feeling sick. My team was struggling during the warm up with some bad throws, and a few guys with lots of drops (the other team had drops, too). In the game to 5, we were up 4-3 but stalled 3 or 4 times near the endzone with drops or forced throws (a few by me) and ended up losing 5-4. We should have won this one. Sam was on my team and doesn't think he's won a game in a month.

Hurricane Florence has shifted and is now projected to pass right over us. I'm looking forward to some hurricane frisbee games on Friday and Monday.
Wed, 12 Sep 2018 06:00:00 Tue, Sep 11, 2018 http://Jon.fastrunningblog.com/blog-09-11-2018.html
AM 7 slow miles (8:30-9:15 pace). Saw 11 turkey, 10 deer, a half dozen spider webs in the face, plus as I was finishing up a fox ran across the trail about 30 yards in front of me, then stopped to look at me. That was cool
Tue, 11 Sep 2018 06:00:00 Mon, Sep 10, 2018 http://Jon.fastrunningblog.com/blog-09-10-2018.html
Lunch- mid-70's today but very humid. 14 people showed up, though the teams were not evenly split (I'd say the other team had 1.5 more fast guys, and then the other team had their slowest player get injured and leave, so we had to start subbing out people, which really skewed it when one of our few fast guys were out). I would have been surprised if we won.

I played really well, though- my throws were generally on-target, including a bunch of long ones early, I had some good catches with no drops (several ankle height catches), and good defense. Game was tied 1-1 before the other team scored 3 straight. My team scored 2 more to make it a bit competitive before losing 3-5. We just didn't have the speed so there were some big mismatches. I was able to trash talk Dennis, who I covered all day, as I scored several and he never did, plus I caught a long bomb over him with some great boxout technique. Plus when I was subbed out, Dennis absolutely rocked my team (at one point intercepting 3 passes on the same point), but I shut him down when I returned. He and I have a friendly rivalry going for a while now- I won the individual battle today, but his team won the game.

Fun day.
Mon, 10 Sep 2018 06:00:00 Fri, Sep 07, 2018 http://Jon.fastrunningblog.com/blog-09-07-2018.html
Lunch- 25 people for ultimate frisbee, which I think ties an all-time record. Hot, humidity index in the upper 90's. 4 teams of 6, plus 1 sub. My team got whupped first game, primarily due to Tye and me having some throwing issues. Lost 2-5. Went to the loser's game, and won fairly easily 5-2.
Fri, 07 Sep 2018 06:00:00 Thu, Sep 06, 2018 http://Jon.fastrunningblog.com/blog-09-06-2018.html
AM GE trail run. Back and hips are a bit sore, and my ankle, and I was moving slowly, but I felt good enough to do 7 miles. Didn't see any animals until near the end, when I saw 2 deer and a few turkey.
Thu, 06 Sep 2018 06:00:00 Wed, Sep 05, 2018 http://Jon.fastrunningblog.com/blog-09-05-2018.html
Lunch- 20 people for frisbee (on a Wednesday!), so 2 fields. We ended up with a stacked team (Strode, Julian, Matt Henry, Claire, me)- offered to trade with the other team, but they declined. Game ended up being more of a battle then expected, as the other team had good handling skills. However, we won 5-4. Second game should have been more even but was a blowout, 5-0 win for my team. It was super humid thanks to a morning rainshower, and I was fatigued from donating blood last week
Wed, 05 Sep 2018 06:00:00 Tue, Sep 04, 2018 http://Jon.fastrunningblog.com/blog-09-04-2018.html
AM back to running. Achilles/ankle still painful. 5 miles on GE trail. Saw 7 turkeys, 6 deer, and 1 person- first time in perhaps a year I'd seen anyone other than Johnnie or Crystal on the trail.
Tue, 04 Sep 2018 06:00:00 Fri, Aug 31, 2018 http://Jon.fastrunningblog.com/blog-08-31-2018.html
Lunch- 5v5 on another hot day, plus my team had a sub. My team was struggling with throwing and catching at the start- comically bad. I had a lot of bad throws to open people, dropped one, and even tripped over my feet and fell down. Game to 5 started and we did a better job being patient and making good throws. We were down 2-1 but came back and won 5-3. Controversial finish on a catch near the end which was ultimately ruled good and then my team scored.

Highlight of the day- I was covering Mike Sherman when he went up for a hard hammer catch but tipped it up accidentally. He landed and leaned forward, putting both hands behind his back, and the disc fell right into his hands. It was awesome.
Fri, 31 Aug 2018 06:00:00 Thu, Aug 30, 2018 http://Jon.fastrunningblog.com/blog-08-30-2018.html
AM- a few minutes on the bike. Very busy at work right now.
Thu, 30 Aug 2018 06:00:00 Wed, Aug 29, 2018 http://Jon.fastrunningblog.com/blog-08-29-2018.html
Lunch- hot again, 12 people for frisbee. As poorly as I played on Monday, I played that well today. Other than a couple of exceptions, my throws were on par, I didn't drop any, and played good defense. I think I threw or caught all but 1 of my team's 5 points. Nice to be throwing well today. The teams were pretty even (the other team said they thought they had a slight advantage, but I don't agree). Game to 5 was tied at 3 before my team scored 2 straight for the win. Then we did a 10 person game to 3, with my team winning 3-1. Felt much better about my play today.

Achilles/heel is bad enough that I've started icing it again. It seemed to respond to the ice.
Wed, 29 Aug 2018 06:00:00 Tue, Aug 28, 2018 http://Jon.fastrunningblog.com/blog-08-28-2018.html
AM 6 miles. I had planned on 8 but my left ankle/achilles was painful the whole time so I cut it short. Not sure what to make of my ankle- annoying. I saw 8 or 9 turkey, 5 deer, plus I saw a fox on the trail while I was driving to park.
Tue, 28 Aug 2018 06:00:00 Mon, Aug 27, 2018 http://Jon.fastrunningblog.com/blog-08-27-2018.html
AM 4- saw a fox right at the start, then 4 deer and 7 or 8 female turkeys. No people

Lunch- frisbee game 7v7. Hot, hottest day in a few weeks. Wore some short, split-leg shorts just for fun. Both teams played poorly, but especially my team- we had a comically large number of bad throws and drops. We got killed in the warmup. In the game to 5, we also were down 3-1 and 4-2. Tom and Dennis kept getting open for passes, at least. I threw away some bad ones. Then I had a long bomb to Tom that he made a great catch on, and we started chugging back. Didn't play a ton better, but the other team started overthrowing it in the endzone. We worked our way back to a 4-4 tie, then we somehow got the winning point. One of the poorer games for me where my team stunk but we won. I guess I'll take it, but I prefer it when we all play better. Oh well, still fun.
Mon, 27 Aug 2018 06:00:00 Fri, Aug 24, 2018 http://Jon.fastrunningblog.com/blog-08-24-2018.html
AM- I think it was below 60 deg this morning. Felt wonderful. 4 easy miles, 8 deer, 1 worker, no turkeys

Lunch- 16 people for frisbee. A few more drops/turnovers overall than usual. At the game to 5, my team was down 3-2 after both teams kept dropping it, then we scored 3 straight for the win. 5v5 followed, my team got whupped 0-3.
Fri, 24 Aug 2018 06:00:00 Thu, Aug 23, 2018 http://Jon.fastrunningblog.com/blog-08-23-2018.html
AM- 8 slow miles (generally 9-ish pace, a bit faster by the end) on GE trail. Wasn't feeling great, took a few breaks. One of those days, just getting through. 11 deer, including 2 fawns, 1 turkey, 0 people. Weather is starting to get cooler, it was only 65 this morning.
Thu, 23 Aug 2018 06:00:00 Wed, Aug 22, 2018 http://Jon.fastrunningblog.com/blog-08-22-2018.html
Lunch- 11 people at frisbee, my team didn't have the sub. It was a battle today though both teams made some unforced errors- my team had some easy drops, and some bad throws. We were down 4-2 before tying it, but the other team won 5-4. Too much sloppiness today.
Wed, 22 Aug 2018 06:00:00 Tue, Aug 21, 2018 http://Jon.fastrunningblog.com/blog-08-21-2018.html
AM 8 miles on GE trail a bit slower- 8:30-ish pace. 5 deer, 1 turkey, no people. Overcast all night so it was warmer this morning, uppper 70's, and humid. My clothes stink by the end of the day.
Tue, 21 Aug 2018 06:00:00
