Just found out a wildfire popped up yesterday right next to the Waldo race course- we run by it twice at mile 24 and 47.  Not sure what this means yet- RD says more info coming today.  I sure hope they don't cancel the race, especially after I've already gotten on my plane tomorrow morning.

Assuming the race does happen, you can follow it at http://www.ultralive.net/waldo/webcast.php or on twitter by searching for #w100k

Just a few hours ago, the Forest Service closed over half of the trails covered by the Waldo course.

The RD is working on alternates, but is not sure if it will be approved by the FS or not.  So, I made a decision at 5 am today to not go, figuring I can save the airfare money and use it for some other race.

Of course, I'm already second guessing myself- after all, life is about experiences, not money.  Who cares about money, anyways, in the long run.  If the race is cancelled, I'm sure I'll feel better, but I hope it isn't for the sake of the runners. As soon as I cancelled my flight, I remembered a conversation I had with Dr. David Horton before MMT 50 last year, when I told him I was thinking of not running due to sickness.  He immediately disagreed, saying to always start the race but be willing to DNF.  But if you don't start, you'll always wonder what could have been.  Well, now I'm wondering.  Live and learn, I guess.  I better find another race to do now.

AM- Wanted to pound out some frustrations, so drove to Rocky Bottom and ran FHT to Table Rock SP and back.  28 miles total, 7600 ft climbing on a very humid day.  Felt good, except the last 6 miles when my lack of calories yesterday and today caught up with me.  The last 2 miles up Sassafrass were pretty miserable, but the descent wasn't bad since I can run down anything even when bonking.  5:23 for the run- good long one.  I saw 2 people in the 20 miles outside the park, and three to four dozen in the park, including running with some of the racers from the Xterra race that I won last year.

Looks like my choice to not go to Waldo cost me a very, very good chance as Western.  Of the top 10 runners in the iRF preview, 5 didn't start and 1 DNF-ed at mile 20.  And Tim Olson has auto-entry.  So, there are 3 guys fighting for 2 Western spots.  I know I could have been in that mix.  The field is so thin for men that, at the finish, 3 of the top 9 spots are women!  I blew my chance, plain and simple, and have no one to blame but myself.  Marci told me yesterday to go and I even agreed for about 1 minute... before noticing that it was already too late to make the airport in time.  Grrr.  I've already decided that if I'm ever in this situation again, I will 100% go to the race unless it is firmly cancelled.  Especially when a WS spot is up for grabs.
