Why I run.

Interesting note- Zeke Tiernan, who I beat at Grand Mesa 50 by 10 minutes, just placed second overall last week at Leadville 100.  Congrats to him!  And it definitely makes me wonder if I can do as well at the Bear... the competition at the Bear is heating up.  Scott Jaime, AJW, Ty Draney, Evan Honeyfield, and now Young Money just signed up.  I'm curious to know if anyone on the FRB knows who Young Money is.

My run today was in North Carolina.  I tried to run the famous Art Loeb trail, but kept getting lost.  So I drove to Mink Creek and ran up to Shut in Ridge trail.  Each run was about 1:50 long.  Total of 23 miles, 3:45, with 5050 ft climbing.  Left home at 7 am, returned from Asheville at 5 pm.

Jon, I think those pictures say it all.

Zeke, now that is a name I haven't heard in a long time. I ran against him back in the day in Colorado. He was a year older and from Aspen, but we raced against those guys quite a bit on the western slope. I am from Craig. Anyway, good to see he is still running. Hope all is going good for you and your family.

Thanks, Dustin. Yup, Zeke is from your neck of the woods, and still running a lot. 2nd at Leadville 100!

Enjoyed your pics on your blog. Great stuff. Good luck at Bear.

Hi Jon, that's exciting that you are in the same league as some of the top ultra runners. I hope the Bear goes great for you.

I've been following your blog and wanted to ask you something. A few months ago I was running and ran into a big rattlesnake. I avoided it, but it made me nervous to run on trails by myself. Do you ever encounter snakes on the trails? Or other dangerous animals? What do you do, if anything, to prevent or prepare for such things?

From Dustin on Mon, Aug 30, 2010 at 12:06:16 from 204.113.48.77

Interesting Steve.. I was wondering the same thing the other day. I've been reading all these adventures that Jon, Cody, and Joe have been going on. Snakes are my biggest fear, even though you are more likely to get hit by lightning

The pics are awesome. What a great month you just had. Good luck in your new adventures.

As for wildlife, I never worry about snakes. We pass by them so quickly the risk of getting nailed is pretty low. As for other wildlife, unless its dark out, I don't worry about them. Maybe Jon has other opinions, but the general rule is to just make a lot of noise and don't run away. Stand your ground (except for a moose).

From Jon on Mon, Aug 30, 2010 at 22:33:34 from 68.119.211.149

Yeah, I don't really worry about snakes. I've almost stepped on more than a few, and it surprises them just as much as me. And I've seen lots of rattle snakes, with no problems. Just don't be stupid and try to pet them.

As for other animals, I'm pretty aware of staying alert and just dealing with what happens. But 95% of trail runs I never see anything noteworthy, and the 5% is usually seeing the hindside of something big (moose, deer, etc). Worst case, I figure I would have a pretty awesome obituary if it said I died from a cougar or bear while trail running.

Thanks, guys.

Anything special you should be aware of with a moose? It sounds like Jun is saying to run away from it, unlike other animals?
