AM- Started out intending to run all the way up Spring Hollow, a steep trail that climbs about 3500 ft in less than 6 miles.  I haven't done it since 2003.  However, almost immediately my left shoe was rubbing my heel very painfully on the steep climbs.  I stopped a number of times to adjust and tighten the shoe, but nothing worked.  I knew it would give me a blister if I kept going, which I don't want the week of a race.  So, just 1.5 miles slow miles into the run (I climbed 1550 ft in that distance), I turned around and ended up running the relatively flat river trail to First Dam.  On the way back, I ran the adventurous canal on the north side of the river that Paul showed me a few years ago.  I'll have to run SH next week, but with different shoes.  12 miles in 2:03 with 2400 ft climbing.

Running on the adventure canal feels like part of a Dora the Explorer TV show, where the map is telling us where we need to go...

"Ok, remember kids, go around the big rocks..."

"Through the tunnel..."

"And over the water tube"

Remember, rocks... tunnel... tube.

Rocks... Tunnel... TUBE!!!

Good luck at Loco, Some day I'll get there. I'll be doing my Wasatch trail work on Saturday.

Awesome! Where is the start? Is it the the canal that people used to tube? After reading some of your trail reports, I decide to do Jardine Juniper Saturday - I have to agree with you, that is a very nice run. Do you run with a trail gps unit? Any recommendations? Trail running is a lot more enjoyable than I thought it would be, but I think my wife worries I'll get lost...

Jason- no, that isn't the tubing canal. To get to this one, cross the road from First Dam into the hydro park, and run up the canyon on the dirt road a bit. You'll see a steep gravel road on your left that switches back and forth a few times until you are above a canal.

Yes, Jardine is a great trail. I sometimes run with a garmin 205, sometimes with nothing. And don't worry about getting lost- you can always just turn around. It is almost impossible to get seriously lost in the Logan mtns- you're never more than a few miles from a road. It's not Alaska or anything.

Thanks for the info. I guess I haven't been on enough trails to see just how close the roads may still be. I guess I should have realized it when, after running 5 miles to Jardine Juniper, the road was in plain view below.

The biggest thing is that if you think you're lost, just follow the trail back the way you came. If you can't find the trail, head downhill- almost all drainages eventually end up in the Logan River.

You can buy a good map at the Forest Service store, too.

Sounds like good advice. Where is the Forest Service Store in Cache Valley?

From Jon on Mon, Aug 09, 2010 at 18:54:57 from 75.169.149.139

On 400 North, just before it goes down the big hill towards First Dam. On the south side of the road.

Now that you say that, it seems so obvious...

Hahaha! That was Dora to the T. Having a 2 and 4 year old girl I can relate only too well. LoL
